Science Fiction Post 2
In my opinion i think that a Science Fiction film is about science and technology, where it is incorporated in the film. Science does not always have to be the main plot device (such as spaceships and u.f.os) of the film but can be a theme, where science and technology is part of the movie as a whole. E.g In the film "twister" science isn't the main topic, but is still a science fiction film because the films theme is about extreme weather conditions which are part of science.
From this trailer, you can see that there aren't any major scientific research or technology present, but is still a science fiction because of the films exploration of extreme weather conditions.
I would i like to get into more depth about the sub genres i like the most, disaster films and monster films.
Disaster science fiction films as i have mentioned are films that will usually have a storyline that lead up to a disaster and its resolution with elements of science fiction in them, such as films that are about alien invasions or global warming.
A disaster science fiction film i would i like to discuss about is Independence Day (1996). The film was about an alien invasion on earth, and its impact on the United States and a resolution that required the characters to destroy the aliens' 'mother ship'
The climax of the film is a well known scene of the movie, where one of the battle ships destroy the white house and others destrey various buildings. The explosion scene was heavily computer generated.
I think that in most Science fiction films, CGI will be present, this is due to the limititations of using real life miniature models. In independence day, the explosion of the white is house treated quite realistically, exspecailly for a film made in the mid 1990's.
